Wheaton, Ill. - Warm and humid weather in this weekend's forecast is forcing changes to the many events scheduled for Thunder teams. As football, cross country and women's soccer have all been impacted.

Aiden Byrne, Zeke Harris, Colin Moore and Josiah Smith named to the D3football.com Preseason All-America Team

Wheaton, Ill. – Wheaton College guard Aiden Byrne , linebacker Zeke Harris , safety Colin Moore , and punter Josiah Smith have been named to the 2026 D3football.com Preseason All-America Team as announced by the website on Wednesday afternoon. Four Wheaton players on the Preseason All-America Team is the most for the Thunder since 2021.

Wheaton football is ranked fifth in the 2026 D3football.com Preseason Top-25 Poll

Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton football team is ranked fifth in the 2026 Division III preseason poll released by D3football.com on Monday morning. The Thunder earns the recognition following a 2025 season that saw the program post an 11-3 record as Wheaton advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs where the squad fell to eventual national champion, UW-River Falls in frigid conditions in Wisconsin. The 11 victories posted by Wheaton last fall is the second-highest win total in program history. Wheaton was ranked seventh in the final D3football.com poll of the 2025 season.

Wheaton Thunder Football Remembers Philip LoChirco and Jalen Shaffer

Former Wheaton College football players Jalen Shaffer ('22) and Philip LoChirco ('23) passed away on Saturday. Both men drowned in Lake Michigan in Port Sheldon Township, Michigan. Shaffer, 26, played four seasons at Wheaton in five years, while LoChirco, 24, played three seasons over four years. Wheaton head football coach Jesse Scott states of both men on Monday, "Our hearts are heavy as we share the tragic passing of Jalen and Phil."

Chase Smith and Trevor Gabriele are elevated to new full-time roles on the Wheaton football staff

Wheaton, Ill. – Wheaton head football coach Jesse Scott has announced the promotion of two assistant coaches for the Thunder football coaching staff for the upcoming season. Chase Smith and Trevor Gabriele continue as Thunder assistant coaches for the 2026 campaign moving from part-time coaching positions to full-time roles.

Jaxon Powell receives the 2026 Chris Martin Perseverance Award from the CCIW

Wheaton, Ill. – The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) announced the recipients of the 2026 Chris Martin Perseverance Award this morning, bestowing the honor to Wheaton football player Jaxon Powell and Mara Walker of the Augustana women's swimming team. This marks the seventh year that the CCIW has recognized a student-athlete with the Chris Martin Perseverance Award, and Powell is the second Wheaton student-athlete to earn the honor since it was awarded by the CCIW in 2020. He joins 2024 recipient Annie Tate (women's basketball) as the two honorees from Wheaton.

Wyatt Lee named offensive coordinator for the Thunder football team

Wheaton, Ill. – Wheaton head football coach Jesse Scott has announced the promotion of Wyatt Lee as offensive coordinator for the Thunder football program. The upcoming 2026 season will be Lee's fifth as a Thunder assistant coach after graduating from Wheaton in the spring of 2022. Lee was promoted to a full-time defensive coaching position following the 2023 campaign and served as the Special Teams Coordinator and defensive backs coach for two seasons.

Defensive coordinator Mikey Swider elevated to assistant head coach

Wheaton, Ill. – Wheaton head football coach Jesse Scott has announced the promotion of Mikey Swider as assistant head coach for the Thunder football program. Swider has served as a Wheaton assistant coach at Wheaton since August of 2020, most recently serving as defensive coordinator since 2024.

Wheaton Athletics announces its inaugural Chi Alpha Sigma honor society class

Wheaton, Ill. – As part of its D3Week activities, Wheaton Athletics has announced its inaugural class for Chi Alpha Sigma, the national college athlete honor society. Chi Alpha Sigma was founded in 1996 by then DePauw University head football coach Nick Mourouzis.

David Nussbaum, Joseph Bracy & Josiah Smith are named to CSC Academic All-America Football Team

Wheaton, Ill. – Seniors David Nussbaum , Joseph Bracy and junior Josiah Smith of the Thunder football team have been selected to 2025 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America Division III Football Team. Each of the three Thunder standouts earned a spot on the Second Team Academic All-American unit. Wheaton's three selections this season marks the sixth time in team history that the program has had multiple selections in the same year. In 2021, Wheaton set a school record with four selections, and in 2022, 2011 and 1976 Wheaton had two Academic All-Americans.

Wheaton football program recognizes award winners at 2025 season banquet

Wheaton, Ill. -- Following an impressive campaign that saw the team win 11 games, reach the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals, and finish the year with a #7 ranking in both the AFCA and D3football.com national polls, the Thunder football program recently held its annual banquet to celebrate the 2025 season and hand out special accolades to a number of its student-athletes. In total, six awards were given to eight players for their contributions to Wheaton's success last fall.

23 Wheaton student-athletes earn CSC Academic All-District honors in four sports

The Academic All-District® teams, selected by CSC, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field, on the court, and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes football honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.

The five selections this year gives Wheaton 55 total D3football.com All-America nods all-time among 41 different Thunder football players since the website began awarding All-America honors in 1999.

Wheaton football team to visit UW-River Falls on Saturday for NCAA DIII Quarterfinal game

River Falls, Wis. -- Following its 49-24 Third Round victory at DePauw University last Saturday, the Thunder football team will travel to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls this weekend for the NCAA Quarterfinals. River Falls booked its place in the quarterfinal round with a 42-14 home win over Saint John's University. This Saturday's game will kickoff at 2:02 PM (CST) in Wisconsin.

Jesse Scott Named D3football.com Region 5 Coach of the Year; 10 Thunder football players earn All-Region honors from D3football.com

Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton Thunder football team placed 10 players on the 2025 D3football.com All- Region 5 Team on Wednesday. Five players from the Thunder offense earned All-Region recognition, four defensive players, and one special teams player picked up the honor. Wheaton placed six players on the First Team unit and four on the Second Team. Additionally, Thunder head coach Jesse Scott earned his first career Region 5 Coach of the Year Award from D3football.com.

Peter Johanik named a 2025 AFCA Division III All-American

Wheaton, Ill. – Wheaton College senior Peter Johanik has been named to the Division III All-American Team by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). There have been 23 AFCA Division III All-American selections from Wheaton through the years, sixth among Division III programs. The Thunder football program has had at least one player selected to the AFCA Division III All-America Football Team for eleven-consecutive seasons, currently the longest streak in Division III.

Mark Forcucci named a semifinalist for the Gagliardi Trophy

Wheaton, Ill. - Wheaton College quarterback Mark Forcucci has been named as one of 15 semifinalists for the 2025 Gagliardi Trophy, an award presented by Stearns Bank and the J-Club of Saint John's University (Minn.) to the most outstanding football player in NCAA Division III. The Gagliardi Trophy, given annually since 1993, recognizes excellence in athletics, academics and community service. The award is named after John Gagliardi, the legendary Hall of Fame head football coach at St. Johns, who retired in 2012 with 489 career victories, the most in college football history at the time.

Thunder football team travels to DePauw on Saturday for NCAA Playoffs' Third Round

Wheaton, Ill. - As a result of last Saturday's wintry win at Wartburg, 28-24 , the Thunder football team will travel to Greencastle, Indiana on Saturday for a Third Round game of the NCAA Division III Football Playoffs. DePauw advanced to Saturday's game with a 26-23 victory at UW-Whitewater. The game this Saturday in Indiana will kickoff at 12:02 p.m. (EST) and 11:02 a.m. in Wheaton and the Central time zone.

16 Thunder football players earn All-CCIW honors

Wheaton, Ill. –The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) announced its All-Conference football team on Tuesday. Wheaton was well represented with 16 All-CCIW selections. Marking the most selections for Wheaton since the 2019 team had 17 All-CCIW performers. Wheaton had nine First Team selections and seven Second Team honorees. Nine members of the Thunder offense earned All-Conference honors, six defensive players and one member of the Thunder special teams unit picked up the award.

Wheaton football team to host Crown College in first round of NCAA Division III playoffs on Saturday

Wheaton, Ill. -- The Wheaton College football team will host Crown College (Minn.) for a First Round game in the 2025 NCAA Division III Playoffs on Saturday, November 22. The Thunder will face the Polars in a noon kickoff at McCully Stadium. The winner of this week's Wheaton-Crown game will advance to face Wartburg College in the next round on Saturday, November 29. That contest will be played in Waverly, Iowa as the Knights have secured hosting rights for the Second Round of the playoffs.

Longtime Wheaton football coach Jeff Peltz is set to begin a new role as Associate Director of Development for Athletics

Wheaton , Ill. – Wheaton College's Chief Development Officer Anthony DAndrea has announced the appointment of Jeff Peltz as an Associate Director of Development for Athletics, a new position within Wheaton's Development Office. Peltz retired as the Wheaton College Postmaster on June 30, a role he served in since 1982. He will continue his role as defensive line coach for the Thunder football team. He joined the Thunder coaching staff in 1982.

Giovanni Weeks of the Thunder football team is named the 2024-25 CCIW Men's Student-Athlete of the Year

Wheaton, Ill. - Giovanni Weeks was selected as the 2024-25 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Men's Student-Athlete of the Year as announced by the league on Monday afternoon. Weeks' selection marks the fourth time that a Wheaton athlete receives the award. He joins 2018-19 award winner Leif Van Grinsven , 2019-20 winner Corey Kennedy , and 2023-24 honoree Anthony Fitzgerald to make up Wheaton's four honorees in the award's 17 years. Four total CCIW Men's Student-Athlete of the Year awards for Wheaton leads the conference. Additionally, Weeks is the first football player from a CCIW school to receive the award since Kennedy in 2020, as Wheaton is now the first football program in the CCIW to produce two recipients of the Men's Student-Athlete of the Year award.

Wheaton Thunder football team travels to Portugal for a competition, service and more (Updated 5/19)

The excursion marks the first international trip for the Wheaton football team with a competition, marking a difference from the teams decades-long WFMP trips . Wheaton, Ill. - Head coach Jesse Scott and the Wheaton College football staff have announced the addition of 42 newcomers that have submitted their deposit to attend Wheaton College, with the intent to play for the Thunder football team beginning in the fall of 2024. This year's incoming class features 36 incoming freshmen and six transfer students hailing from 12 different states.

Thunder football to host a prospect camp in July

Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton Thunder football program will be hosting a prospect camp at McCully Stadium on July 12. The camp is open to those in grades 9-12 and is designed to help foster the development of the fundamentals and techniques of the game of football, while introducing prospects to Wheaton College and Wheaton Football. Wheaton, Ill. – Giovanni Weeks and Trevor Gabriele of the Thunder football team have been selected to 2023 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America Division III Football Team. Weeks is a First Team Academic All-American this year and Gabriele is a Second Team honoree. Wheaton's two selections this season marks the fifth time in team history that the program has had multiple selections in the same year. In 2021, Wheaton set a school record with four selections, and in 2022, 2011 and 1976 Wheaton had two Academic All-Americans.

Mikey Swider named defensive coordinator for the Thunder football team

Former Wheaton College head football coach J.R. Bishop died Tuesday, June 21. He was 84. In 1982, he was named head coach of the Crusaders' football program. Wheaton, Ill. – On January 7, as part of the CCIW's announcement of winter sports schedules , the league also said that it would be revealing schedules for fall sports to compete in the spring - including football. Mike Swider announces his retirement as football coach

Wheaton, Ill. – Wheaton College's Mike Swider has announced his retirement as head football coach, effective December 31, 2019. A 1977 graduate of Wheaton, Swider has been involved in Wheaton College football for 39 seasons, beginning with four years as a student-athlete on the football team (1973-76). He returned to Wheaton as defensive coordinator, serving in that role for 11 seasons from 1985-95. He has served as head coach for 24 seasons (1996-2019).

With signing the free agent contract, Sigler will be invited to particpate in Arizona's preseason training camp this summer. The the group, picked on a yearly basis, consists of a first, second and third team and is comprised of the top football players in NCAA Division II and III, along with the NAIA.

Wheaton senior Spencer Clark is named the recipient of the Rimington Award for Division III

Wheaton, Ill. - Wheaton College senior Spencer Clark has been named the recipient of the 2014 Rimington Award for Division III. The Rimington Award recognizes the most outstanding centers in the NCAA's FCS, Division II, Division III and NAIA. The Rimington Award is named after Dave Rimington, the only two-time winner of the Outland Trophy in addition to back-to-back First Team All-American selections for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

The Wheaton football team will open its 2010 season on Saturday at 1 PM (EDT) at Albion College. Saturday's game will be the seventh meeting between Wheaton and Albion on the gridiron. #3-Ranked Thunder football team to take on #13-North Central Saturday in the annual "Little Brass Bell" game

On Saturday at 2 PM, the third-ranked Wheaton football team will travel to 13th-ranked North Central in a battle for first place in the CCIW standings. This is the 90th meeting in the all-time series between Wheaton and North Central, with the Thunder holding a 49-37-3 edge in those meetings. Wheaton has come out on top in nine of the last 11 contests with the Cardinals. The winner of Saturday's game will receive the "Little Brass Bell" trophy that has been awarded to the winner of the Wheaton-North Central game since 1946.

2009 Wheaton football newcomers

30 incoming freshmen who have commited to attend Wheaton College in the fall of 2009 have indicated that they intend on playing for the Thunder football team. Additionally, four transfers have indicated they plan to play football for the Thunder.

Wheaton, Ill. (7/31) – The Thunder football team has earned a ranking of 13th in the 2007 D3Football.com Top 25 Poll . Wheaton has been in the D3Football.com Top 25 poll for at least one week during each of the six years that the poll has existed. D3Football.com also recognized two members of the Thunder defense as preseason All-Americans. Senior defensive end Andy Studebaker was a First Team All-American honoree and junior cornerback Pete Ittersagen was a Second Team selection.

2007 Wheaton Thunder Football Season Preview

In 2006 the Wheaton football team returned to the NCAA Division III Football Playoffs, after a one-year absence from the tournament. The squad also won the program’s fifth CCIW Championship in the past seven seasons. The 2006 edition of the Thunder posted a 10-2 overall record and tied for the conference title with a 6-1 league record.

(11/14) – The Wheaton Thunder football team reaped the rewards of its fourth CCIW Championship in five years when the announced its 2006 All-Conference team and award winners on Tuesday. Wheaton had 13 players selected to the All-CCIW team, representing a Thunder squad that finished the regular season with a 9-1 record and a 6-1 mark in conference play. Wheaton is ranked 17th in Division III this week by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and will host College of Mount St. Joseph on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs. Due to the Thunder success this year, head coach Mike Swider was selected as the “Bob Reade Coach of the Year” by his peers.

Thunder football team ends the season with a 35-3 loss to Mount Union in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Football Playoffs

Alliance, Ohio (11/25) - The Wheaton Thunder fell to the Mount Union Purple Raiders 35-3 Saturday afternoon, in the second round of the 2006 NCAA Division III Football Playoffs. This marks the fifth time the two teams have met in the post-season; Mount Union has defeated the Thunder all five times. The Purple Raiders move to 12-0 on the season, and advances to the third round of the tournament to play Capital on December 2. The Thunder finishes its season with a final record of 10-2.

Wheaton, Ill. (11/18) – The Wheaton College football team advanced to the second round of the 2006 NCAA Division III Football Playoffs with a 42-28 victory against College of Mount St. Joseph in a first round game on Saturday at Wheaton’s McCully Stadium. Wheaton will travel to Mount Union College next Saturday for a 12 PM (Eastern) kickoff. Mount Union advanced with a first round on victory on Saturday against Hope College. Wheaton is now 10-1 on the season, while Mount St. Joseph ends the year with a record of 9-2. Today’s game marked Wheaton’s fifth NCAA Playoff appearance, as the Thunder is now 5-0 all-time in first round games of the tournament.

Thunder earns CCIW Title with a 49-14 win against Illinois Wesleyan

Wheaton, Ill. (11/11) – The Wheaton Thunder football team clinched its fourth CCIW Championship in the last five seasons and its fifth title in the last seven years with a 49-14 win at home against Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon. With the win Wheaton finishes the regular season 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the CCIW. Head coach Mike Swider said of winning the CCIW crown, “It is great to be conference champs. I believe that we will be in the playoffs and hopefully we will get a home game.”

Chicago, Ill. (10/21) – The Wheaton College football team tallied its highest single-game point total in 47 years with a 73-26 victory at North Park University on Saturday afternoon. Wheaton, ranked 24th in this week's American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division III Coaches Poll, is now 6-1 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. North Park falls to 1-6 on the season and 0-4 on the year. The Thunder will host Elmhurst College next Saturday at 1 PM at McCully Field.

Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton football team earned a 31-19 victory against North Central in front of a full Homecoming crowd at McCully Field on Saturday afternoon. The Thunder trailed the Cardinals 13-0 at halftime, but the hosts rallied with 31-unanswered points in the second half.

Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton College football team, ranked 25th in this week's D3Football.com Top 25 Poll , earned a 48-7 victory against Washington University (Mo.) on Saturday afternoon at McCully Field. Wheaton improves to 2-0 with the non-conference victory, while the Bears fall to 2-1 on the season. The Thunder will travel to Hope College next Saturday for 12 PM (CDT) kickoff in Holland, Mich., while Washington will host North Central next Saturday night.
