Wheaton student-athletes earn academic recognition from CCIW
Wheaton, Ill. - With the conclusion of the 2016-17 academic year, Wheaton student-athletes have been honored by the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin for their work in the classroom. Throughout the school year, Wheaton had more than 200 student-athletes earn All-Academic CCIW recognition. The Academic All-Conference team consists of letterwinners from CCIW member institutions who achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher.

Six Thunder student-athletes earned recognition as the school's recipients of the Jack Swartz Award. In the fall season, volleyball player Shelby Knowles was Wheaton's female Jack Swartz Award recipient and Eric Stevenson of the Thunder football team was Wheaton's male Jack Swartz Award recipient. Knowles, a recent Wheaton graduate, earned her degree in Business/Economics. Stevenson recently completed his sophomore year and is majoring in Economics. For the winter season, Katie McDaniels of the Wheaton women's basketball team was Wheaton's female recipient and wrestler Logan Walkup was Wheaton's male recipient. McDaniels recently graduated with a degree in Applied Health Science and Walkup recently graduated with a degree in Business/Economics. For the spring season, Nicole Kitchen of the Wheaton women's track and field team was Wheaton's female award winner and Leif Van Grinsven of the Thunder men's track and field team was Wheaton's male honoree. Kitchen recently finished her sophomore year and is a double major in Psychology and French. Van Grinsven recently finished his sophomore year and is majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies.
The Jack Swartz Award is given to one male and one female athlete from each conference school at the conclusion of each of the three athletic seasons (fall, winter and spring). The honor is given by the CCIW and each of the eight schools in the league picks their own representatives. The winners from each school must earn a varsity letter in his/her sport and have a grade point average of at least 3.50. The award is named after the late Jack Swartz, a former Wheaton student-athlete, coach and athletic administrator who served as the first Commissioner of the CCIW until his death in 1998.
