Sam Cote named the CCIW Special Teams Player of the Week

Wheaton, Ill. - Wheaton placekicker/punter Sam Cote has been named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Special Teams Player of the Week for football. Cote helped lead the Thunder to a 27-17 victory against Millikin on Saturday at home.

Cote kicked a 28-yard field goal with 2:41 remaining in regulation to give Wheaton a 10-point lead and a two-possession advantage against the Big Blue. His 36-yard field goal with 12:31 left in the fourth quarter increased Wheaton's lead from 21-17 to 24-17. As a punter he completed a 20-yard pass on a fake punt to extend a Wheaton drive that would allow the Thunder to score its first touchdown of the game seven plays later. He also booted a punt to the Millikin six-yard line with Wheaton leading by seven and 8:12 left in the game, setting up the Wheaton defense for a three-and-out that would then set Cote up for his own field goal that would increase the lead to 10.

Cote has converted eight of his 12 field goal attempts this season. His eight field goals this year is the second-highest total in the CCIW and he is ranked 27th in Division III with an average of 1.0 field goals per game. He leads the CCIW in punting with an average of 42.4 yards per punt, a number that would rank fourth in Division III in the category, however Cote has not met the NCAA-minimum criteria of 3.6 punts per game.
