Jalen Shaffer named CCIW Football Student-Athlete of the Week on defense

Wheaton, Ill. - Jalen Shaffer, a senior on the Thunder football team, have has been named a CCIW Student-Athlete of the Week on defense. Shaffer earned the recognition for his effort in last Saturday's 56-0 victory against Elmhurst. This is the first career player of the week award for Shaffer from the CCIW. He is the fourth Wheaton player to earn the weekly award from the CCIW this season joining: Will Bowers (offense on Sept. 19); Riley Schwartz (defense on Sept. 26) and Giovanni Weeks (offense on Sept. 26).

Shaffer had a pick-six interception returned for 53 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter to increase Wheaton's lead to 33-0 in Saturday's win against Elmhurst. Shaffer led Wheaton in total tackles in the outing, with eight, including five solo stops. Among his five solo tackles were a pair of minus-3 yard tackles for lost yardage in the first half. Additionally, he had a pass break-up in the second quarter.

Shaffer has a team-high 39 total tackles this season, including 28 solo stops. He has five tackles for loss (minus-17 yards), including one quarterback sack (minus-8 yards).

Shaffer and the Thunder travel to Carthage next Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff against the Firebirds.
