Brett Anderson and Sam Cote recognized with CCIW Player of the Week awards

Wheaton, Ill. - Wheaton College linebacker Brett Anderson and kicker/punter Sam Cote have each been recognized as CCIW Player of the Week for football, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon. Anderson was named the conference's Player of the Week on defense and Cote was honored for his work on special teams. The duo helped lead the Thunder football team to a 28-3 victory against Elmhurst College last Saturday. Wheaton is now 6-0 on the season, 3-0 in CCIW play and ranked 10th in this week's D3football.com Top-25 poll.

Anderson recorded nine total tackles in Saturday's win against Elmhurst, including six solo stops. He registered one tackle for lost yardage (-3 yards) and one pass breakup, with a quarterback hurry. The team captain led a Wheaton defense that held Elmhurst to just 98 yards of total offense in the second half, including only 27 yards in the fourth quarter. Wheaton held its opponent without a touchdown for the second consecutive week and the third time this season. Anderson leads the Wheaton defense with 32 total tackles this season, including a team-best 21 solo tackles.

Cote serves as Wheaton's punter and also kicks field goals and PAT's for the Thunder. In Saturday's win against Elmhurst he averaged 42.2 yards per punt on five punts. He kicked a 56-yard punt that pinned the Bluejays inside their own two-yard line late in the first half and four of his five punts landed inside the Bluejays' 20-yard line. He was also four-for-four on PAT attempts in the win. Cote leads the CCIW in points scored by a kicker this season (7.7 PPG); he also is the league-leader in field goals (5) and in PAT's (31).
