Walt Whitehead hired as offensive line coach for the Thunder football team

Wheaton, Ill. – Wheaton College has announced the hiring of Walt Whitehead as an assistant coach for the Thunder football program. Whitehead will serve as the offensive line coach for the Thunder, effective immediately.

Whitehead is no stranger to the Thunder football program. He previously spent 12 seasons at Wheaton during his career. He served as a Thunder assistant from 1990-93 before returning for a second stint from 1999-2007, as the team's offensive line coach. He left his previous post at Wheaton in March of 2007 to serve as an assistant coach at California University (Pa.).

Whitehead served as the Vulcan's defensive line coach last year, helping guide the team to a semifinal berth in the NCAA Division II Playoffs. California posted a record of 13-1 this year and two of Whitehead's defensive linemen were named All-Americans by D2Football.com.

Whitehead played at Purdue University from 1966-69 and was a graduate assistant there in the spring of1970. During his career at Purdue Whitehead was a member of the 1967 Rose Bowl team, and played in the 1969 North-South Shrine Bowl. He also was awarded the Leonard Wilson “Most Respected” Player Award in 1969, and at the completion of his final season played in the 1970 Hula Bowl.

At the college level Whitehead has coached 14 All-Americans and during his time at Wheaton he has mentored 14 CCIW All-Conference players. Whitehead's 36-year coaching career began as a head coach at Jefferson Morgan High School (Pa.) in 1972-73 and followed with a two year stint at Brownsville High School (Pa.). From 1976-88 he coached at Lehigh University and was a scout for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1989. He was head coach at Carlisle High School (Pa.) in 1994-95. From 1996-98 he served as an assistant at Concordia University (Ill.).Print Friendly Version
