Scott Roche named a finalist for the 2011 Fred Mitchell Award

Wheaton, Ill. - Wheaton College senior Scott Roche has been named as one of 10 finalists for the 2011 Fred Mitchell Award. The Fred Mitchell Award is given out each year to the Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III, NAIA or NJCAA placekicker

that excels on the football field and in the community. The place-kicker chosen for this Award

will be announced by December 15, and he will be honored on February 20, 2012 at the National Football Foundation Chicago Chapter Awards Ceremony at Halas Hall in Lake Forest, Illinois.

Roche joins Gregg Berkshire of Ashland University, Zach Brown of Portland State University, Allen Cain of Texas Lutheran University, Jacob Garhart of Ripon College, Brad Greenway of Cornell University, Billy Janssen of Drake University, Josh Kay of Linfield College, Tom Lynch of St. Xavier University and Tyler Sievertsen of Northern Iowa as the 10 finalists for the award. The group includes four kickers from NCAA Division III, four from the Football Championship Subdivision, one player from NCAA Division II and one from NAIA.

Roche, a First Team All-CCIW honoree at kicker, led Wheaton in scoring this fall with 74 points as he converted 13 of his 16 field goal attempts. He finished the 2011 season ranked 11th in Division III in field goals per game. Ealrier this week he was named to the D3football.com All-North Region First Team and was tabbed as a Second Team Division III Capital One Academic All-American. Roche's 40 career field goals is a Wheaton school record and is 12th all-time in Division III history. Roche is one of only 17 players in the history of Division III football to convert at least 40 field goals in a career.

The Award is named for Fred Mitchell, the record-setting place-kicker, Wittenberg University Athletic Hall of Famer, author, and Chicago Tribune sports columnist. The selection committee for the award is looking for nominees for the award based on excellence on the football field and in the community. The winner of the Fred Mitchell Award will be announced in mid-December.Print Friendly Version
