Thunder football places an all-time best six players on the 2021 CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 Division III Football Team

Wheaton, Ill. – Six members of the Wheaton football team have been named to the 2021 CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 Division III Football Team. As Division III First Team Academic All-District selections this year, all six players will be on the national ballot for the CoSIDA Division III Football Team that will be announced December 16. Six selections to the First Team unit of the Academic All-District Football Team is the most ever in a single season for the Wheaton football program.

The three players on the Thunder offense that earned a spot at: quarterback Luke Anthony, running back Giovanni Weeks, and offensive lineman Graham Wall. The Thunder defensive players to earn selection are: linebacker Ryan Schwartz, defensive back Caleb Egbert and defensive back Josh Shaffley. These six starters have been an instrumental part of leading No. 6 Wheaton to an at-large berth into the 2021 NCAA Division III Playoffs with a 9-1 overall record.

Anthony, a senior, a Business and Economics major at Wheaton with a 3.91 cumulative grade point average. He has started all 10 games for the Thunder at quarterback this season, throwing for 2,068 yards with 18 touchdown passes. Anthony has completed 142 of his 235 passing attempts for a 60.4 completion percentage this season.

Weeks is a Business and Economics major at Wheaton with a 3.67 cumulative grade point average. The junior running back is among the leading rushers in Division III this season, running for a league-best 1,191 yards. He is averaging 132.3 rushing yards per game, tying a school record with 19 touchdowns. His 8.3 yards per carry average for the season is ranked second in Division III.

Wall is a senior offensive tackle for the Thunder. The Business and Economics major holds a 3.81 cumulative grade point average at Wheaton. Wall is a starter on a Thunder offensive line that has helped Wheaton to 15th in Division III in total offense this season at 483.9 yards per game. The Thunder offense is 16th in the nation in rushing offense with 248.3 rushing yards per game and sixth in scoring offense at 48.8 points per game.

Schwartz is a Business and Economics major at Wheaton with a 3.82 cumulative grade point average. The senior linebacker was a semifinalist for the 2021 National Football Foundation "Scholar-Athlete" award earlier this fall. Schwartz leads the highly ranked Wheaton defense in total tackles with 76, including 55 solo stops. He has 9-1/2 tackles for loss (-17 yards), and two interceptions.

Egbert is a senior cornerback for the Thunder. He is a Business and Economics major at Wheaton with a 3.45 cumulative GPA. Egbert has made 31 total tackles this season, including 25 solo stops. He leads the Thunder defense with four interceptions, tying for the CCIW lead in the category. He returned three of his picks this season for a touchdown.

Shaffley is an Applied Health Science major at Wheaton, holding a 3.71 cumulative grade point average. The senior cornerback has played in all 10 games for Wheaton this season, making 21 total tackles (18 solo). He has one interception and a blocked kick in the 2021 campaign for the Thunder.

The CoSIDA Academic All-District® Team is part of the CoSIDA Academic All-America® program, that honors student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level in athletics and in the classroom. Members of the eight First Team Academic All-District® squads in each Division advance to the national ballot, where they have the opportunity to be selected for the Academic All-America Team. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA; a 2,000-plus member organization consisted of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

Through the years, Wheaton student-athletes have earned a total of 103 Academic All-American selections through the prestigious program. Since 2000, there have been 78 Academic All-American selections from Wheaton. There have been 21 Wheaton College football Academic All-America selections among 16 players since the program began: Bill Hyer (1973); Eugene Campbell (1975 & 1976); Craig Carter (1976); Steve Haugen (1976); Paul Sternenberg (1988), Bart Moseman (1992); Pedro Arruza (1993, 1994 & 1995); Jeff Brown (1995); Chip Parrish (1996); Dane Lundgren (2002); James Hoxworth (2003); Andrew Day (2005); J.J. Clark (2011); Scott Roche (2011), Eric Stevenson (2017 & 2018) and Corey Kennedy (2018 & 2019).

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Division I, II, III, NAIA and junior colleges covering all NCAA championship sports.Print Friendly Version
