The Swider Era 1996–2019
Twenty-four seasons, twenty-three of them winning, nine conference championships and ten NCAA playoff berths. Mike Swider took what Bishop had rebuilt and made it permanent: the winningest tenure in Wheaton football by every measure there is, and the only stretch in which a losing season became genuinely unusual.
The shape of it is worth reading slowly. After a 4–5 second year — the only losing season of the twenty-four — Swider's teams did not finish below .500 again. The conference titles came in clusters: 2002, 2003 and 2004; then 2012; then 2014, 2015 and 2019. The 2003 team went 12–1 and the 2019 team went 12–1 in his final season, sixteen years apart and identical on paper. Ten playoff appearances in eighteen years put Wheaton in the national bracket as a matter of routine rather than of occasion, and J.R. Bishop was on the staff as offensive coordinator for the first decade of it.
