Official recap · Wheaton College Athletics, wheaton.edu

Game #2 - Wheaton College 42, Anderson University (Ind.) 3

Anderson, Ind. (9/18/99)- The Wheaton College

football team improved its record to 2-0 this afternoon with a 42-3 road win

over Anderson University (Ind.). The Crusaders have twice met the Ravens,

the first meeting was a 69-6 in 1998, outscoring Anderson 111-9 the last two

seasons.

Wheaton junior runningback Brian Pastermack (Merritt

Island, Fla./Merritt Island) had four rushing touchdowns with 144-yards gained

on the ground on 16 carries for a 9-yards per carry average. Pastermack finished

the game one touchdown shy of the Crusaders single-game record of five in

a game by Chuck Schoenherr against Lake Forest on November 22, 1947. Senior

runningback Jeff Ford (St. Charles, Mo./West) gained 65 yards on eight

carries for 8.1 yards per rush. Crusader quarterback Mitch Slater (McHenry,

Ill./McHenry) was 13-23 passing for 168 yards with one touchdown toss. Senior

wide receiver Ben Peays (Austin, Texas/Westlake) led the Wheaton receiving

corps with five catches for 94 yards. On the defensive side of the ball the

Crusaders defense had five sacks for 55-yards lost, along with 13 tackles

for lost yardage for -68 yards.

Wheaton head coach Mike Swider said of his teams effort, "the

thing that I am happiest about is that we ran the football well. We didnt

run the football in the first week (last Saturdays 35-12 win over Washington).

We have to get that going if we are going to beat some good football teams."

The Wheaton mentor said of the Wheaton rushing game, "We have to be able to

run the football to win the conference championship, we are a capable and

I know we can run the football so it was nice to see it happen." Swider continued,

the thing that frustrated me was that I thought that we came out flat on offense.

We fumbled the ball and we made some turnovers." Swider remarked on his defense,

"I thought the defense play really hard. I thought we played the entire third

quarter with our backs to the wall."

Wheaton scored its first touchdown with 7:28 to play in the

first quarter when Pastermack had a 41-yard touchdown jaunt that capped a

one-play drive for the Crusaders who started the drive on the Ravens 41-yard

line. Pastermack again reached the end-zone on a 36-yard touchdown scamper

that culminated a seven-play drive of 75 yards for the 14-0 Wheaton advantage.

Pastermack made his third trip to the end zone at 10:42 into the second quarter

on a 17-yard touchdown run that capped a 56-yard drive that lasted three plays

for a 21-0 Crusader advantage. Slater threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to receiver

Jay Westra (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) that gave Wheaton a 28-0 advantage.

At the end of the first half Pastermack had a three-yard touchdown run to

conclude a seven-play drive.

Anderson made it 35-3 at the 2:52 mark of the third quarter

when John Anderson kicked a 30-yard field goal. Wide receiver Jeremy

Amos (Austin, Texas/Westlake) caught an eight-yard touchdown pass from

sophomore quarterback Matt Harris (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South)

to give Wheaton the 42-3 final advantage. Wheaton improves to 2-0 on the season,

while Anderson falls to 0-3. Wheaton will be off next Saturday, but will start

conference action on Saturday October 2, when they travel to North Central

College for the annual Little Brass Bell Game with a 6:00 PM kickoff.
