Wheaton,

Ill. (9/22) - The Hope Flying Dutchmen had the football flying

today at Wheaton's McCully Field as the guests handed Wheaton a 33-26 defeat.

It was Hope's second win over Wheaton in as many seasons, but the Thunder

have a 9-7 advantage in the all-time series between the two teams. Hope improves

to 2-1, while Wheaton's record falls to 1-2. Wheaton's two losses this season

have been at home; marking the first time Wheaton has lost consecutive home

games since losses to Augustana and Millikin in the first two home games of

the 1997 season. Wheaton will start conference play next Saturday with a 6

PM kickoff at North Central, while Hope will host Wisconsin Lutheran next

week.

The two clubs

racked up a lot of offense, amassing 808 yards of total offense on 143 plays

for an average of 5.7 yards per play. Hope had 418 yards of total offense,

tallying 320 passing yards with five touchdowns through the air and 98 rushing

yards on 35 attempts. Wheaton amassed 390 yards of total offense with 255

passing yards and 135 rushing yards for the game. Hope had the ball for 30:47

of total possession to 29:13 for the Thunder. However, in the second half

Hope had two lengthy touchdown drives of over 6:30 to have a 17:57 to 12:03

edge in time of possession in the second half.

Wheaton quarterback

Josh Anderson (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) was 18-31 passing for 255

yards with one touchdown toss and no interceptions. Junior running back Mike

Whalen (Wimberley, Texas/Wimberley) had 20 carries for 81 yards with two

touchdown scampers. Junior Bryant Wolfsberger (San Juan Capistrano,

Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) carried the ball nine times for 51 yards

and one touchdown, while returning three kickoffs for a total of 67 yards.

Junior receiver Jon Wills (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) made four

catches for 65 yards, while junior fullback Corey Noonan (Phoenix,

Ariz./Desert Vista) also added four catches for 31 yards with one touchdown

catch.

Junior linebacker

Justin Knapp (Ames, Iowa/Ames) led the Wheaton defense with 12 total

tackles (six solo), adding one tackle for lost yardage and a pass broken-up.

Junior defensive tackle John Diggs (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights)

performed well with nine total tackles, including two tackles for lost yardage.

Junior defensive back Shawn Wildt (Victoria, Texas/Victoria) and sophomore

linebacker Jeff Mumm (Grapevine, Texas/Colleyville Heritage) each made

eight total tackles, as Wildt forced a fumble and Mumm made two tackles for

lost yards.

Hope's sophomore

quarterback Phil Butler completed 22 passes on 36 attempts for 320

yards with five touchdown tosses and no interceptions. Receiver Mike Gle

made eight catches for 160 yards and four touchdown catches. Gle's exceptional

day gives him 18 touchdown catches for his career, breaking a 30-year-old

Hope College record for touchdown receptions in a career. Brian Adloff

also made eight touchdown catches for 101 yards on the day. Running back

John Sloothaak carried the ball 20 times for 65 yards and made one

catch, a 10-yard touchdown reception.

Hope scored

on the opening drive of the game when Gle caught a 10-yard pass from Butler

that gave the guests a 6-0 lead with 11:56 left to play in the first quarter,

capping a nine-play drive of 80 yards. Gle gave Hope a 12-0 lead with 7:07

left in the first quarter catching a 27-yard pass from Butler, concluding

a six-play drive of 57 yards. Wheaton got on the scoreboard with 13:18 to

play in the second quarter when Whalen scored on a three-yard touchdown run.

Wheaton took a 13-12 lead with 10:35 left to play in the first half on a 16-yard

touchdown scamper by Whalen, concluding a six-play drive of 59 yards. The

Whalen touchdown was setup by two Anderson passes of 24 and 17 yards to Wills.

Wheaton missed an opportunity to stretch its lead with 4:50 left in the first

half when Noonan caught a pass from Anderson at the one yard line, but he

fumbled and the ball went out-of-bounds at the end zone giving Hope the ball

back and concluding a 64-yard drive that lasted 4:45.

Wheaton got

the ball to open the second half, but the hosts' drive stalled and Hope capitalized

immediately. Butler found Gle for a 67-yard pass on the first play of the

next drive to give the Flying Dutchmen an 18-13 lead. Wheaton's next drive

stalled and the guests scored on their next drive on an impressive drive that

lasted 21 plays, and 90 yards and took 6:36 to run. The drive concluded when

Sloothaak caught a 10-yard pass from Butler with 3:13 left to play in the

third quarter to give his team a 26-13 lead. A key moment in the drive occurred

when a Butler pass to Adloff fell incomplete at the 20-yard line on fourth

down and 15 yards to go, but Wheaton was called for defensive holding. The

penalty gave Hope a first down and the ball at the Wheaton 10-yard line -

three plays later Sloothaak was in the end zone. Wolfsberger scored on a two-yard

touchdown run with 00:08 left in the third quarter to cut the Hope lead to

26-19. Wolfsberger's run capped an eight-play drive that went 76 yards and

was setup three plays earlier on a 32-yard pass by Anderson to junior Randy

Rosen (Satellite Beach, Fla./Satellite Beach).

its lead to 33-19 with 2:56 left in the game when Gle caught an 11-yard pass

from Butler, capping a 15-play drive of 86 yards that ate 7:16 off of the

clock. Noonan caught a 14-yard pass from Anderson in the end zone with 00:34

left in the game to cap an 11-play drive of 63 yards that lasted 2:22. Wheaton

was unable to recover the onside kick that followed the touchdown and Hope

ran out the clock to secure the victory.

Thunder

rolls over Wabash, 58-33 (Boxscore)

Crawfordsville,

Ind. (9/15) - When a football team scores 58 points, it sounds

impressive. In the case of Wheaton's 58-33 win at Wabash on Saturday

the win was impressive, as was the overall effort by the team. The Thunder

offense tallied 30 points in the win, while Wheaton's defense scored

12 points and regularly set up the offense's scoring opportunities by

forcing five Little Giant turnovers. The Thunder special teams also

contributed to the total 'team effort' by directly putting 13 points

on the scoreboard, and giving its offense good field position throughout

the game on returns. During the game Wheaton took advantage of good

field position that it received from the Little Giants on a number of

opportunities. Both Wheaton and Wabash now have 1-1 records on the season.

Wheaton will host Hope (1-1) next Saturday at McCully Field.

Wheaton

started the scoring five minutes into the contest when it scored on

its first drive of the game when junior Mike Whalen (Wimberley,

Texas/Wimberley) scored on a five-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead.

The touchdown drive thoroughly established the Thunder offense in the

game. Wheaton got the ball when the Little Giants' first drive of the

game stalled and Whalen returned a punt 13 yards to the Wabash 49-yard

line. Whalen single-handedly accounted for the next 49 yards as he had

seven rushes for 49 yards on the seven play drive, including a 32-yard

scamper. The hosts tied the game at 7-7 when Chris Morris scored

on a nine-yard touchdown run to cap an eight-play drive of 80 yards.

Wheaton

set the tone for what would be a frenetic second quarter when wide receiver

Jon Wills (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) caught a 43-yard pass

from quarterback Josh Anderson (Claremont, Calif./Claremont),

just 22 seconds into the second quarter. Wills' (PICTURED LEFT) touchdown

catch was the first play of a drive that started when Wheaton got the

ball on the Wabash 43-yard line on a 17-yard punt. A little over one

minute later fullback Matt Harris (Glenview, Ill./Glenbard South)

reached the end zone on a one-yard run to give the guests a 21-7 lead

with 13:24 left in the first half. Harris' touchdown was setup two plays

earlier when Justin Knapp (Ames, Iowa/Ames) intercepted a pass

from Little Giant quarterback Jake Knott at the Wabash 35 yard line,

as the Thunder defensive line put heavy pressure on Knott. One play

after Knapp's interception Anderson found receiver Randy Rosen

(Satellite Beach, Fla./Satellite Beach) wide open on a 34-yard pass

to the Wabash one-yard line that setup Harris' scamper into the end

zone on the next play. Just one minute later Wheaton took a 28-7 advantage

on a 47-yard interception return by linebacker Jeff Mumm (Grapevine,

Texas/Colleyville Heritage), with 12:22 left in the first half. Wabash

scored with 6:22 left in the first half when Knott threw a five-yard

pass to Ryan Short to cut the Wheaton lead to 28-14. The Little Giants

cut the lead to seven at 28-21 when Knott threw a 14-yard pass Brandon

Clifton with 5:52 left in the first half. On the next drive Wheaton

sustained a long 11-play drive of 4:30 minutes that concluded when sophomore

Grant Tillotson (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) kicked a 22-yard

field good with 1:28 left in the first half. Tillotson's field goal

was setup by a 24-yard pass from Anderson to Corey Noonan (Phoenix,

Ariz./Desert Vista) on fourth and six at the Wabash 24-yard line.

Wheaton

began to stretch its lead on the kickoff that opened the second half

when junior Bryant Wolfsberger (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Santa

Margarita Catholic) returned the kick 80 yards by darting through a

number of Little Giants up the middle of the field, and giving his team

a 37-21 lead. Wabash closed the Thunder lead to 37-27 with 13:08 left

in the third quarter when Knott found Short for a 64-yard touchdown

toss. With 5:49 left in the third quarter Wolfsberger scored on a 12-yard

touchdown run for a 44-27 Wheaton advantage.

The

scoring re-started again in the fourth quarter when senior defensive

back Bob Bollweg (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) intercepted a

Knott pass and returned it 14 yards into the end zone with 5:02 left

in the game to give the guests a commanding 51-27 lead. On the first

play of the next drive Short caught a pass from Knott for a 64-yard

touchdown catch with 4:38 left in the game and a 51-33 Wheaton lead.

On the next drive Wheaton picked up Wabash's on-side kick at the Little

Giant 49-yard line and three plays later Anderson found freshman Brad

Musso (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) on a 51-yard touchdown toss

with 3:39 left in the game for the final 58-33 final score.

Anderson

threw for 297 yards on 15-31 passing with one interception and two touchdowns

and no sacks. The Thunder offensive line was solid in protecting its

quarterback and opening holes for the Wheaton running game. Whalen carried

the ball 19 times for 64 yards and one touchdown. Wills led the Wheaton

receiving corps with four catches for 92 yards and one touchdown catch.

Whalen also returned four punts for 81 yards, while Wolfsberger had

four kickoff returns for 144 yards, including the 80-yard touchdown

return. Sophomore Andrew King (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista)

had four receptions for 60 yards, while Rosen had three catches for

64 yards.

total tackles for the Thunder, with two tackles for lost yardage. Knapp

(PICTURED RIGHT) tallied 12 total tackles, a fumble recovery and his

interception. Mumm made nine total tackles with his 47-yard interception
