No. 5 Ranked Thunder football team defeats Kalamazoo, 58-6

Kalamazoo, Mich. – The fifth-ranked Thunder football team defeated Kalamazoo College 58-6 on Saturday afternoon under sunny skies. Wheaton improves to 2-0 on the season and Kalamazoo falls to 0-2.

Wheaton registered 516 yards of total offense on Saturday with 304 rushing yards and 212 passing yards. The Thunder defense held the Hornets to 148 yards of offense as the hosts ran for 42 yards and passed for 106.

Senior Sola Olateju ran for 87 yards on eight carries, including a 59-yard touchdown run. Junior Stone Watson (PICTURED ABOVE) ran for 67 yards on two carries with a 59-yard touchdown run. Watson also had 115 yards on kickoff returns, including an 88-yard return for a touchdown.

Thunder quarterback Curtis McWilliams was 4-for-8 passing with 35 yards through the air. Jesse Furrow was 10-for-13 on passing attempts with 133 passing yards and one touchdown. Spencer Peterson was 3-for-3 with 44 passing yards.

Chase White led the Thunder receiving corps with 57 yards on five catches and one touchdown. Adam Terrini caught three passes for 72 yards.

Dallas McRae led the Wheaton defense with seven total tackles, including one tackle for loss (-2 yards). Senior linebacker Luke Sahly (PICTURED RIGHT) registered six total tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss (-17 yards) and a 14-yard quarterback sack. Eric Stevenson made six tackles, with a quarterback sack of eight yards. Defensive back Robby Schwartz intercepted a Kalamazoo pass on the afternoon.

Watson returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown to give the Thunder a 7-0 lead. Watson's 88-yard kickoff return to open the game is the longest kickoff return by a Thunder player since a 93-yard return by Justin Swider at Benedictine on September 7, 2013.

Olateju broke open for a 59-yard touchdown run on the second play of Wheaton's first offensive drive. Olateju's score increased the Thunder lead to 14-0 with 13:30 remaining in the first quarter. Watson reached the end zone on a 59-yard touchdown run to increase the guests' lead to 21-0 with 5:03 remaining in the first quarter. Spencer Peterson reached the end zone on a four-yard touchdown run to increase the Thunder lead to 28-0 with 36-seconds remaining in the first quarter. Peterson's TD capped a six-play drive of 58 yards.

The Hornets reached the scoreboard with 1:41 remaining in the first half as quarterback Zach VanFaussien threw a nine-yard TD pass to Seth Dexter for a 28-6 Wheaton lead. Wheaton responded on its next drive as Jesse Furrow threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Chase White (PICTURED LEFT) with 22-seconds left in the opening half. White's touchdown accounted for Wheaton's 35-6 advantage at halftime.

The Thunder defense stopped the Hornets' first drive of the second half and Phillip Nichols returned the ensuing punt 51 yards for a touchdown to increase the guests' lead to 42-6 with 13:21 remaining in the third quarter. TJ Williams capped a 62-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run that increased the Thunder lead to 49-6 with 2:28 remaining in the third quarter. A Hornets miscue on a punt attempt resulted in safety for the Thunder that extended the 'Orange and Blue' lead to 51-6 with 54-seconds left in the third quarter.

Senior Jerome Grey scampered into the end zone on a nine-yard touchdown run with 11:21 remaining in the fourth quarter to increase the Thunder lead to 58-6. Grey's touchdown capped an eight-play drive of 60 yards.

The Thunder open conference play next Saturday as Carthage visits McCully Stadium at 6:00 p.m. for the home opener.
