Wheaton College AthleticsThunder football team earns a 28-3 win at Millikin
Decatur, Ill. – The Wheaton football team continued its undefeated season on Saturday with a 28-3 victory at Millikin (2-4/0-3 CCIW) on Saturday night. Wheaton is now 6-0 on the year and 3-0 in CCIW play.
Wheaton, ranked 11th in this week's AFCA Division III Coaches Poll and 19th in the D3football.com Top-25 will host nationally-ranked North Central next Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Next Saturday's battle at McCully Stadium is the annual "Battle for the Little Brass Bell" between the Thunder and the Cardinals and features the only two teams in the CCIW that own undefeated overall and conference records this season.
The Thunder offense racked up 396 total yards, with 240 rushing yards and 156 passing yards. Millkin amassed 374 yards of total offense, with 197 passing yards and 177 rushing yards.
Senior running back Jesse Geary ran for 103 yards on 16 carries, with two touchdown runs. Thunder starting quarterback Johnny Peltz (PICTURED LEFT) completed 13 of his 23 passing attempts for 156 yards, with one touchdown toss. Peltz ran for 93 yards on 20 carries, including one touchdown run. Keegan Kemp led Wheaton's receivers with four catches for 84 yards, including one touchdown catch.
Junior linebacker Mikey Swider (PICTURED RIGHT) recorded 17 total tackles to lead the Thunder defense. Adam Dansdill tallied 13 tackles for the guests, with three passes broken-up. Alex Mendez had an interception in the Thunder secondary and linebacker Caleb Ashby recovered a fumble.
Millikin quarterback Nick Pippin completed 19 of his 37 passing attempts for 192 yards. Justin Brooks ran for 67 yards to lead the Big Blue rushing attack and Brady Cufaude caught six passes for 87 yards. Matt Madrigal and Jake Gates led the Millikin defense with 12 total tackles apiece.
Wheaton reached the scoreboard late in the first quarter as Peltz threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Kemp (PICTURED LEFT) with 3:24 remaining in the first quarter to give the Thunder a 7-0 lead. Kemp's touchdown catch capped a lengthy nine-play drive of 83 yards.
Millikin kicker Chayce Volpert booted a 32-yard field goal with 6:30 left in the first half to trim Wheaton's lead to 7-3. Peltz scampered into the end zone on a one-yard touchdown run with 3:15 remaining in the second quarter to extend Wheaton's lead to 14-3. The Thunder maintained the 14-3 at the halftime intermission.
Geary ran into the end zone for a four-yard TD run with 10:26 remaining in the third quarter. Geary's score gave Wheaton a 21-3 lead. Geary reached the end zone again in the fourth quarter when he scored on a two-yard run to account for the 38-3 final score with 2:12 left in the game.Print Friendly Version
